麦德林孔子学院的设立是时任中共中央政治局常委、中央书记处书记、国家副主席习近平于2009年赴哥伦比亚访问时确定的项目。该所孔子学院于2010年4月30日正式揭牌成立，中国驻哥伦比亚大使高正月、哥伦比亚麦德林市市长阿隆索·萨拉萨尔·哈拉米罗、辽宁省教育厅副厅长李树森、大连外国语时任校长孙玉华、安蒂奥基亚大学校长阿尔贝托·乌里韦·科雷亚、伊菲特大学校长胡安·路易斯·梅西亚·阿郎克、前哥伦比亚驻华大使、孔子学院外方院长巴勃罗·埃查瓦利亚等100多人出席揭牌仪式。
The establishment of Medellin Confucius Institute is one of the programs settled during the visit of Xi Jinping, former member of the Standing Committee of CPC Central Political Bureau, member of the Secretariat of CPC Central Committee, and former Vice President of PRC, in Colombia in 2009. The Institute was opened on April 30th, 2010, and the opening ceremony was attended by over 100 officials including Gao Zhengyue, Chinese Ambassador to Colombia,Alonso Salazar Haramiro, Mayor of Medellin City, Li Shusen, Deputy Director of Liaoning Provincial Bureau of Education, Sun Yuhua, former DLUFL President, Alberto Uribe Correa, President of University of Antioquia, Juan Louis Mejia Arank, President of EAFIT,Pablo Echavarría, former Colombian Ambassador to PRC and Colombian President of Medellin Confucius Institute, etc.
2015年，哥伦比亚麦德林孔子学院承办了第十四届“汉语桥”世界大学生中文比赛哥伦比亚赛区预赛，孔子学院学员马修脱颖而出，代表哥伦比亚参加决赛并取得了美洲总冠军的好成绩。2016年，学员陈天轲斩获哥伦比亚赛区冠军，进入在华总决赛。
In 2015, the Institute held the preliminary contest (Colombia) of the 14th "Chinese Bridge" World Chinese Language Competition for University Students, and a student named Matthew in the Institute participated in the final on behalf of Colombia and won the championship in the Americas. In 2016, another student, with the Chinese name of Chen Tianke, won the championship in the contest zone of Colombia and entered the final of the competition held in China.
该孔子学院成立以来，在三所大学和麦德林市政府的共同努力下，已经发展建设成为当地推广汉语和传播中华文化的重要平台，倍受当地民众欢迎。
Since its establishment, the Institute has developed into the key platform for promoting the Chinese language and spreading Chinese culture with the support of Medellin City Hall and the three Colombian universities, and has become very popular among local people.
